@ Into the Rythm… : Classical violinist Itzhak Perlman is not a jazz improviser so this meeting with the Oscar Peterson Quartet is more a loving tribute to the melodies (ten veteran standards plus two Peterson originals) than a strong jazz date.
@ MSNBC :Peterson suffered a stroke in 1993 that weakened his left hand, but not his passion or drive for music. Within a year he was back on tour, recording “Side By Side” with Itzhak Perlman.
@ The Yale Herald : Perlman says :”Actually the first time I realized that I could play klezmer was when I was doing my recording with [jazz pianist] Oscar Peterson, and after one of the takes, the producer says, “You know, that sounds like klezmer.” So then I thought that maybe I could play klezmer”.
@ The Washington Post : “Oscar Peterson says as he began making the jazz album “Side by Side” with classical violinist Itzhak Perlman : I hate to sound egotistical, but I’m not an apprehensive person, I usually have some indication I more than likely can pull it off, or I wouldn’t have gone, believe me. I hate halfway measures.”
